Restarting numbering and style changes

Please help.

I have a Word 2002 (SP3) document in which I am using outline
autonumbered paragraphs. I don't like the way they look, so I reformat
the indentation and the hanging indent (using Format | Styles |
Modify).

When I select *Update to match selection*, all of the other paragraphs
of that style change, as I expect.

The paragraphs renumber from the very 1st instance, so that instead of
1-3, 1-5, and 1-2 (two restarts), I now have paragraphs numbered 1-10
(no restarts). And I somewhat expect this as well.

However, when I restart the paragraph numbering in the second group,
the paragraph I just formatted changes back to what it was, as do all
the others (autonumbering restarts as desired). This is most definitely
NOT what I expect.

What am I doing wrong?

Are you changing the indents in the Paragraph dialog or the Numbering
dialog? You can't change the indents of numbered paragraphs in the Paragraph
dialog; they are overridden by the settings in the Numbering dialog.

Nope. Not unless you like spaghetti numbering. Outline numbering should be
applied through styles. You can get away with using bullets and numbering
without styles in short documents that aren't going to be heavily edited or
transmitted to others, but eventually it will bite you.

OK, thanks for your input, everybody. With your help and some further
research, I corrected the problem by changing the settings in the
Bullets and Numbering/Customize dialog.

Again, thanks everybody.
