XP Home Restart & log & sleep issues

I have xp home service pack 3. the machines just keeps running and nothing
happens after it restarts or logs back on. I have to stop the machine and
start it up again. thanks for your help

And the "they"?

Did this start after SP3 was installed?
Have you installed the latest hardware drivers from (I'm guessing here) the
"they's" web support page for your make/model of computer?
Is this a laptop?
 
No it is a desktop. I only take downloads sent to me automatically. No. it
started befor that on an offf and on basis. Now it is always
