I've tried to make the icons on my desktop smaller than the default setting
of 96 DPI and I find this is not possible.

Just me ... or is this true of all versions of Vista? I'm using Vista Home
Premium. Thanks, DH

Ctrl+Mouse wheel or open classic appearance properties|advanced
button, select Icon from the pull down menu and set. Either way does
the same thing.......just the Ctrl+Mouse is soooooo much easier

FYI the latter way has many more options for appearance settings.

That's interesting, I can change the size smaller (and larger) using the
zoom function on my mouse. The icon itself gets smaller though the entire
'footprint' of the icon area stays the same, larger is dfferent. At one
point the entire icon footprint area starts to grow along with the larger
icon.

Why can this be changed via the mouse and not through the Windows Icon
option? I have too much free time.

Right click desktop, choose Personalize, click Window Color and Appearance,
click Open classic appearance properties for more color options link, Advanced
button, Icon spacing (horizontal) and Icon spacing (vertical) from drop down
list -- adjust to your preferences.

You're welcome.

New organization in Vista -- can't even remember how it was done in XP now!

Hi
I am having the same problem. I change and resize the desktop icons via
advanced button in classic view, however they return to the large default
setting and the icon reverts to some obscure icon that is not even on the
list of available.
Any other suggestions??
