I know that PowerPoint resizes text in placeholders automaitcally as you add
more text and this can be switched on and off, but is there away to get it to
do this with normal text boxes that I draw (I also know that you can format
text boxes to resize)?

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

I don't know of any way to do exactly this but there's a tool included with the
free PPTools Starter Set at http://starterset.pptools.com that lets you size
text up/down by 1 point at a time.
