Residual Data from Pivot tables. Excel 2000

I have an xls file that imports weekly time reporting stats over many months. Pivot tables are used to produce reports. The data grows as time moves on. At the beginning of this year, I wiped all the old data and started fresh, including deleting the rows that contained the old data. However, if I select "show items with no data" from the field settings, all the old project names are still there, even though this years data does not use them. Where do they come from? Surely, we're using space poorly here
