I have already tried system restore, but that doesn't restore my settings
regarding: fonts, theme's, desktop preferences etc. What do I need to do to
restore all of these to what they were from the factory? My NB came with XP
Pro, I downloaded the SP2 upgrade when it became available last year from
Windows Update. Have I provided enough info in order to correct this issue.
Thanks in advance.

Did your computer come with a set of recovery CDs, or does it have a recovery partition? Either of these will permanently erase your hard disk and reinstall the software that was installed by the manufacturer.

Did your computer come with a Windows XP installation CD? You can use this to reinstall Windows.

In either case, your computer's manual will describe how to use these, or check the computer manufacturer's web site for directions. System Restore is not used for returning your computer to factory settings.

My Dell dimension 3000 (I Know!!!!) has been playing up recently. I am not
really interested in any advice other than how to restore it's factory
settings... saving as much as possible in the process...

Here is a link to Dell's web site. It's the Dimension 3000 Software Reinstall Guide:
http://tinyurl.com/7tq87

This will erase your hard disk and reinstall the software that was on your computer when it left the factory. Make sure to backup all your personal files before you start.
