I'm going to network my desktop with my laptop this weekend. After I
run my Cat 5 cable I've got to insert a Netgear Router into my system. The
router was given to me by a friend who has used it in the past. I'm not sure
if it still has his settings on it so should I press the reset button to get
it back to factory settings before I connect to my system? It is a Netgear
RP614.
I'll have to download the manual from Netgear's website.

That would have my vote. Starting with factory specs makes sense. You also
should try and download the current firmware, when you download the manual.

I agree with Chuck, no sense in leaving the old config in, your friend
could have opened up some ports that do not need to be opened, he could
be using a DSL provider that requires PPoE and his settings could still
be in there, etc. He could have it setup for static IPs instead of
DHCP, best to just hold that reset button down and start over. Gets
rid of all the gremlins!

I assume if I just plug the router in without actually connecting it to the
modem and press the reset button, that will do it? I've got to get my ISP
info first also.

It depends upon the router. Some let you just poke the button, which just makes
it reboot. To get an actual reset, you have to either:
# Hold the button on for a few seconds, until you see action.
# Power the router up with the button depressed.

Here's where you have to read the manual, as every vendor does it differently.
