Easiest is to log on as another administrator and change the password for
the built-in administrator.

I have heard that there is a way to boot to a live Linux cd and
edit a certain file on the hard drive to the password I want so
I can get into the machine. Are you familiar with the name of
the file I need to edit and exactly the format of it so I know
what to change?

thanks,
charles....

So, what you are saying now is that your original post should have said, "I
have forgotten or lost or never knew my administrator password. I need to
be able to bypass/change the administrator password to one I do know. How
would I do this given I cannot log onto the machine as an administrative
user (or any user at all...)?"

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Going to http://www.google.com/ and searching for:

forgotten Windows XP administrator password

Comes up with over 6 million hits - of which one of the top is:
http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm

And:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html
Which is likely the 'one' you were talking about - and the instructions are
on the page.

Wasn't intentionally trying to be sneaky. Just want to use my system again.

thanks.

Didn't say or even intend to imply you were trying to be 'sneaky'. I was
trying to help you out by showing you how to search the Internet for answers
and how to come up with search phrases and such that would give you the best
results.

Essentially - if you give too little information - you won't get much.
If you give too much - you'll get overwhelmed.

Your problem was a 'forgotten Windows XP administrator password' <- thus
that would be the best way to find an answer (search for exactly what was
needed and on what it was needed...)
