Research Tool hangs Word

Hi. Recently I've been getting a situation in Word (2003) where the Research
Tool (for references) keeps getting enabled even when I have not used any
reference tools or turned it on from Tools menu - it just appears for no
reason. The problem is that this causes Word to hang completely - I can't
access any menu option, perfom any functions, or close the document. I have
to close Word, which then closes the document. Restarting Word cures the
problem, but only temporarily, sometimes only for a few minutes, sometimes
for longer - I can't spot any pattern. Incidentally, This also happens in
Excel.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm using MS Office 2003 under Vista.

Thanks Suzzane. The problem I'm having is closing the research task pane, not
opening it. I can't close it or do anything at all, other than just close
Word. Any thoughts?
(BTW, I couldn't reply to your postfor some reason)
 
I was just pointing out how you might be opening it inadvertently. You
should be able to close it with the X; I don't know why this would hang
Word.
