Hello, newbie here (to the group, not computers).

Apologies if I break protocol.

I have a system that goes to 100%CPU usage immediately I switch on the
broadband modem.
After about 5 minutes it returns to normal, but jumps to 100% every so
often for a minute or two.

O/S: Win2K 5.00.2195 SP4
CPU: PIII 800Mhz
MEM: 256Mb
AV: AVG7Free
FW: Sygate Personal 5.5

Anyone know of an app that lets me see which process is doing this?

Oh yeh, anyone come across something called SPAZBOX?
Do I really have to reinstall the XP system?

So far so good... said:

First thing I would do would be to remove all 'permitted' entries in
the Sygate database. Let it start over and ask you for everything
trying to call out. If/when it gets to something you don't recognize,
stop. Deny it access.

Second, get these free anti-malware apps:

The first hit at google.com:

Google is your friend.
Do I really have to reinstall the XP system?

Not likely.

Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up the taskmanager.

Ctrl-Alt-Del brings up the taskmanager.
Well, thanks for that, but I'll bet Task Manager doesn't list EVERY
process and certainly not to any great detail.

<snip lotsa good stuff>

Cool, ta, I'll give that a shot.

On Spazbox, it (I hope there's not more) appears to block regedit,
running and/or installation of AVG (except in context-shell mode ie "scan
with..")
I'm in as Admin.
Also can't reset to any previous System Restore Point.

Then use one of the more in-depth process displays, like Process View
(by Igor Nys) or Process Explorer from Systernals (www.systernals.com,
of course). I haven't heard of malware, that will close *these*, yet.

I think
http://www.softpanorama.org/Unixification/windows_process_viewers.shtml
provides a good collection of such tools, to choose from.
