Repost: Old Gateway Won't Recognize WD External

I downloaded the driver from WD site, unzipped on 98SE and rebooted,
but the computer will not recognize the drive. If anyone has advice,
thanks.
 
Need more info. Is it usb1 or 2? Can you see it in device manager? Can
you see it if you boot something like Ghost 2003 from DOS?
