I have a dell laptop for which I want to clear my bios password. I
have the password and can access my computer no problem. I just want
to get rid of the password but do not know how.

If someone in this group can give me some instructions as to how to
reset that password (or let me know of the best group to ask this I
would appreciate it very much.

Thanks in advance

scott

Scott;
The process is motherboard specific and has nothing to do with Windows.
Check your manual and/or contact Dell for details.

Generally to access the BIOS:
Reboot
Briefly there will be a message similar to "Press ** to enter Setup"
Typical keys are F1, F2, Delete, Esc and others.
You need to quickly press that key.
Then look around, usually a Password tab.

Jupiter,

Thanks for the reply. Let me first fill in some info that I didn't
include. I am working on a Latitude x1.

The password protection was installed by the tech. folks at my old
company which has since fallen on hard times. I didn't think to ask to
have it taken off because I knew the password now I am I realize that
if I ever sell this it will be a pain for the new owner.

Having said that I, realize I have not checked to see that what I am
dealing with is a bios password. What I see when I restart is a VERY
brief splash screen with dell and a centrino logo followed by a white
on black screen telling me that this machine is password protected and
I have to enter a password to continue.

I had assumed that this is what I BIOS password did but I realize now
that it could be a separate program. If it is a non bios password -
any guesses as to where I can get to it to get rid of it.

Thanks again .

Scott

PS I realize I am in the wrong group here but I appreciate your time in
responding.

It sounds like a BIOS password, start with that assumption and you will
quickly find out if it is correct.

Scott, as Jupiter had stated previously, the BIOS password is
motherboard specific. Unfortunately there is no software, as far as I
am aware, that can resolve this issue for you. Even if you were able to
get into the BIOS and access the password menu, it would more than
likely only allow you to change, not delete. The only way to clear the
password is a jumper located on the motherboard. You would actually
need to open up the laptop to the motherboard and switch the jumper
position to clear the password. So depending on how mechanically
inclined you are, you may need to take it to an IT professional.

The OP knows the password, he just needs to know how to remove it.

Also most laptops do not have a password jumper like desktops, making
resetting the password more complicated if it is not known.
