Repost -Function in Template

B

Boris Mohar

Hello again,

I have function =(B1*20) in column C in my Template.
When I import data:

Data> Import External Data,

My data is the tab delimited bill of materials. I set it up so that there is
a blank entry for column C I expected that after data import the column C
will contain whatever number was in column B times 20

The only imports available are Edit Text import and Data range properties.
Others are grayed out.

I select Edit Text Import and go with the defaults. At this point data gets
imported and the column C function gets overwritten with a blank instead of
getting filled by adjacent values in column B multiplied by 20

Why is data overwriting the implementation of the function?

What version of Excel are you using? I tried this with excel 2000 and it
worked fine. I went to Data|Get External Data|Import Text File which then
lets me browse to the text file. I click open on the text file and it asks
whether I want to import it as a delimited or a fixed width file. I clicked
Delimited and it worked. You may want to make sure there are not rogue
characters (paragraph signs or tabs) in the file that may be messing things
up.

Good luck

It is Excel 2003. Just to be sure I created a new template with only
=(B1*20) in column C. My data is tab delimited. I even stripped the header
from the data. When I import external data the column C arrives empty and
now I just notices that my function has been shifted all the way to column L
because the imported data stops at column K Some of the data in Column K was
numeric and in those instances the column L contained the correct *20 values
In other instances where the data was text the column L contained #VALUE!
Why did the function in column C get shifted right by data instead of
operating on it?
