Maybe the OP meant Registry?

The Registry is backed up automatically - as part of system restore among
other things. If you periodically image your entire drive/s and system the
registry is included in those as well.

It gives you the opportunity to restore it, assuming deleting the repository
is your next step. Same purpose as any backup.
