Report with phantom data

I am helping a collegue with an inherited database problem. A report is
printing with phantom data. The database is a payroll type database and one
employee has information printing twice.

I went to the tables and deleted the data, but the information still printed
on the report - twice. Then we backed-up the database and ran a compact and
repair utility - the info is still there!

Any ideas on what to do next?
