What do you mean by "format the value when I print it out"?
Are you doing that in the report definition?
(I don't have any first-hand experience with this kind of slow-down, so I'll
suggest that you search on-line with some of the related terms.)

It's quite common to build a query that returns the raw values, then base
a
report on it that formats the values for printed output.
How are you "completing the report"? Are you including the time to print
it, or merely to display it in print preview mode?
