report: Knoppix / Ubunta => Athlon 64 x2 4400+ cpu

Just built a new system, AMD Athlon 64 x2 dual core with nVidia GeForce
7900 PCI-express video card. Well, tested mobo+cpu+graphics by booting
with Ubuntu (latest) and unfortunately ubuntu could not detect the
graphics and gave bizarre and unusable display, could not load X
(graphics). Knoppix v4 however, worked great-- showed detection of the two
processors, booted X gui. Just reporting, in case anybody with a similar
linux build decides to test their build with a live CD-- Knoppix shines
again.

sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Scroll down to where it says the driver is "nv". Change that to "vesa"
or "fb". Save and quit. Start X.

Follow the advice at Ubuntuforums.org about downloading and installing
nvidia drivers.

Yup, I actually just did that about 5 minutes before I read your post and
praise the Lord (and this is coming from an atheist) I now have GUI, X,
joy! Damn, at least with X I can now access newsgroups, email, etc. even
if I do not have 3D acceleration with the GeForce 7900 (which I gotta
figure out how to get sometime soon, otherwise it becomes a very very
expensive 2D-only video card).

I will check it out, thank you. I have downloaded and installed the latest
nvidia graphics drivers for linux though, seems they just are not working
with the GeForce 7900
