Replying to an auto-reply with an auto-reply

We have a rule setup for one of our inboxes to autoreply to all senders.
Only problem is if the sender turns on their out-of-office-assistant, it will
autoreply to our autoreply and it will go back and forth infinitely. In five
minutes I manged to accumulate 2300 emails from the same sender. Is it
possible to only autoreply once or something else of that nature?

Depends on how the OOF message is setup. Assuming Outlook is the client
software with a standard OOF message (using the top of the OOF page), it
should reply only once to any given sender. If the sender used the bottom
part of the page and created a rule, the response will be sent every time
the rule criteria are met leading to the mail loop you're seeing. This
sender needs to modify his OOF settings. As a aside, this sort of email
loop is the reason that Automatic Replies and OOF messages to the internet
are disabled by default in Exchange Server.

Since I have no control ove what the other end does, would it be best if I
used ooa instead of a rule?
