replication problems

DM

ok so ive been trying to figure this out for a while now, and i just cant
seem to figure this out.

After i installed XP SP2 and connected to my domain controllers, i had
massive problems with active directory and GPOs because of the adm files.
Then i found this error in event viewer on one of my DCs

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Replication error: The directory replication agent (DRA) couldn't update
object
CN=B3E8865CAB794A9C800A746D3DCE7618E88E10B3E84611D7A15600055D3229B3,CN=Objec
tMoveTable,CN=FileLinks,CN=System,DC=mydomain,DC=com (GUID
b9f03a22-b9fc-44c0-86e4-fec6f3c0ff5d) on this system with changes which have
been received from source server
01e71ee1-9b61-41e3-a5e0-8a293650b758._msdcs.mydomain.com. An error occurred
during the application of the changes to the directory database on this
system.

The error message is:
The replication operation encountered a database error.

The directory will try to update the object later on the next replication
cycle. Synchronization of this server with the source is effectively blocked
until the update problem is corrected.
If this condition appears to be related to a resource shortage, please stop
and restart this Windows Domain Controller.
If this condition is an internal error, a database error, or an object
relationship or constraint error, manual intervention will be required to
correct the database and allow the update to proceed. It is valuable to note
that the problem is caused by the fact that the change on the remote system
cannot be applied locally. Manually updating the objects on the local system
in not recommended. Instead, on the source system (which has the changes
already), try to reverse or back out the change. Then, on the next
replication cycle, observe whether the change can now be applied locally.
The record data is the status code.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

After i sorted out all the GPO issues out, i still can not get this machine
to replicate from my other 3 DCs? Its driving me insane. How can i go about
locating which object in AD is assigned that guid so i can take care of it?

I found this article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;253644 but that only
tells me to apply the latest service pack, in which the machine already has,
and all updates applied... should i reapply sp4??

If anyone has any other ideas i would be greatly appreciative, because i am
half tempted to dcpromo this stupid thing, as i dont even think i need this
machine to be a DC anymore. (4 DCs for a 40 user office?)

i just have a feeling someone is gonna ask for this, so here is the output
of a dcdiag:

Coinsider disabling the DLT service on DCs, then delete these objects out of
AD.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312403/EN-US/
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315229

Also, your DCDIAG reports replication is out of date by more than two
months.
The last success occurred at 2004-08-08 08:50.15.

Even if you delete these objects, I doubt the DC will begin replicating
again.
The machine account passwords will be out of sync preventing mutual
authentication required for replication.
Plus there is risk of lingering objects on your DC if you successfully get
it replicating again. The risk is low since you are just over the 60 day
mark.
This is all assuming you have not modified the default tomestone lifetime of
60 days.

The quickest way to get this DC back to life is to force demote it (DCPROMO
/FORCEREMOVAL)
metadatacleanup follow KB216498
then join it back to the domain and run dcpromo on it to make it a replica
again.

Thanks Glenn!
im not gonna bother making this thing a DC again, as the machine is running
exchange 5.5 and it really kills the time it takes for this machine to
reboot. But hey, what can you expect when you inherit a windows domain from
a bunch of morons.

thanks again!
