Replacing text in Word

When I select typed text in Word, and type something new, it used to replace
the text for me. It doesn't anymore. the new text is added to the beginning
of the already typed text. Also, when I select some typed text and hit
backspace, the typed text is not deleted. What can I do to fix this? Thanks.
 
Select Tools > Options > Edit tab and turn on "Typing replaces selection".
