I keep getting an error message, and I think the
indicated problem is preventing me from running certain
programs:

The message reads: "Following file cannot be found:
SHELL.DLL"

As far as I can tell, this file is indeed on my computer
in C:WINDOWS\system

I have been told that the error is probably due to a
trojan virus and that I should run a program to detect
and remove all viruses from the computer, and that it
would then be necessary to replace the file.

I have run Mcafee Virus scan and Ad-Aware and have
removed all viruses and spyware (the error message
persists) but how do I replace the SHELL.DLL file?

Many thanks to anyone that can help.

James,

Try doing a search on your hard drive (use Advanced' options-checking hidden
files & folders, system folders & sub folders) for shell.dll. I'm sure you
have two or three other copies somewhere. Copy & Paste replacing the one
giving you the error (paste into Windows/System). Let us know. Thanks.
