replacing characters vs. inserting, while editing text in Word

While editing a Word document I place the cursor, let's say in the middle of
a sentence and start typing. I want to add words and this usually works this
way, but sometimes the following characters [following the ones I am typing]
are deleted with each new character I type. How do I turn on or off this
option?

Press the Insert key once to turn off Overtype mode.
