Replacing 2000 AD Server with new one

JOE

We are buying a new server. EW want to take our old one
offline. Currently it is the only 2000 dc its running ad,
dns, dhcp and wins. WE have a nt 4.0 machine thats a bdc
running exchange. I've never done this before and need
instructions, and an opinion on what to expect. Thanks in
advance.

First: SLOW DOWN. Move carefully.

Make a backup.

Bring up another Win2000 DC (now); transfer your roles
(FSMO) and GC to the new DC. Transfer DNS, WINS,
or any other essential services.

Are the directions any different if you want to keep the server as the
same name as the old DC?

What if, though, you wanted to keep the new server as the same name? I
have a new server that I want to put in place and too many things are
pointing to that server (RIS,printing,etc).

Thanks for the help.

It is possible to restore the System State of one server
to another -- even perform a DC pseudo-promo this
way (they liked it so much it was turned into a Win2003
feature, "Promote from Media" in DCPromo.)

It is also possible to install a server with the same name
(after removing the first) and turn it into a DC so that
clients don't realize.
