Replacements for corrupted ATAPI drivers

After running windows update earlier this week, my combo CD-RAM/DVD-ROM drive
stopped working; the properties for the device say that the driver is
corrupted. The drive manufacturer (LG) says that it uses the windows
drivers. When I run driver update it says that it can't find any newer
drivers.

How can I replace the corrupted files?

I'm running XP Pro v. 5.1

Thanks,
Bruce

CD-RAM drive? That one is new to me.

Do NOT be afraid of the registry hack here.
It is SAFE and has helped MANY people.
Respect the registry, don't fear it.

1) Log on with Administrative Privileges

2) Open the Registry Editor:
a) Go to Start then select Run.
b) Type regedit and click OK.

3) Backup you registry by:
a) Highlight My Computer by clicking on it once.
b) Click File (Windows XP) or Registry (Windows 2000), then Export
Registry File.
c) Select export range All; to ensure your entire registry is backed up
completely.
d) Select where you would like to save this backup, name the File, and
Click on the SAVE button.

4) Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values:
a) Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
b) Highlight this key by left clicking on it once.
c) On the right hand side delete the values Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

5) Restart your computer.

Or try this:

Select 'Windows Utilities' and scroll down to 'Restore CD/DVD drives to
Windows Explorer.'
Perhaps his utility will do the trick. =)

I tried both of these - thanks for the quick advice. Unfortunately, neither
of them worked. I also noticed that the "driver file details" for the device
now references fewer files.

I have found that I can get the drive to work if I hit "Uninstall" on the
Driver tab of the device properties (but not if I select uninstall from the
context menu in the Device Manager window) and then us the Add Hardware
wizard. However, the device stops working again when I reboot.

If I go into the setup screen at boot time, the drive appears as the
Secondary Master, which from the available settings seems like it should be a
hard drive. I don't recall whether this is a change from when the drive was
working. I haven't even had the case open in the last month or two, so there
shouldn't have been any modifications at the hardware end.

Thanks,
Bruce
