Replace Vista with XP - how?

I replaced my old Desktop (with XP) with a new one - unfortunately it
came pre-loaded with Vista. The new machine is has the bare minimum
hardware to run Vista, so it is slow. I have used Vista for 4 weeks, but
I don't like it. Can I replace Vista with XP, without losing all my
data? I suppose I can back it all up, but how do I get rid of Vista and
start afresh? Do I have to reformat the hard disk? I know the new
machine will boot from CD rom, so will reformatting, followed by booting
from an XP CD, followed by restoring from backup, do the trick?

Hi Marcel,

You have to remove the partition that Vista is installed on, then create a
new one, format it, and install XP. You should be able to do this by booting
the XP CD and running setup. At the point where you pick the installation
point, remove the Vista volume, create a new one, format and proceed.

Is the original XP an OEM provided on a different machine or a retail version no longer in use ?
