repeating spybot issue...suggestions?

Pamela G.

Hi all,

Doing my typical Friday system check/cleanup on my 'puters. Desktop is
usually full of garbage due to several people using it (Win 2K, SP3). Got
rid of stuff with AdAware (current) and Spybot (current) and ran Norton 2003
anti-virus (current), Registry Mechanic (evaluation version). Went to
Windows Update and tried to run the current security updates. Most
downloaded just fine, but was unable to successfully download SP4 or the
cumulative OE update without it "failing". Still had a few suspicious popups
and stuff, so went to safe mode and re-ran everything. Found more stuff. I
ran each program three or more times until clean, BUT, Spybot kept finding
the same DSO exploit stuff multiple times, even after "fixing" it. Does that
mean there is a version of this 'bot that resists cleanup? Or is Spybot
being cranky? Or am I totally missing something else?

I appreciate any suggestions. :)

That DSO Exploit may not actually be a problem. I heard some talk about it
on an episode of The Screen Savers on G4TechTV. Do a Google search for it
and see if you come up with anything. Spybot may need to be updated, I
think there is a version 1.3 available now.

As long as you are fully patched (all critical Windows Updates installed)
you don't have to worry about DSO Exploit. Also, as Kevin said, check your
version. 1.3 is released and that "bug" appears to be fixed. The former
version would always find it. I had it on my Ignore list.

Look in Windows Update.log or iuhist.xml for errors associated with
installing SP4 and MS04-018. Compare them to errors listed on the above
page.

Hi Pamela,

I would like to suggest that you try the following suggestions to install
the Windows updates first.

Suggestion 1
Right click Internet Explorer from the desktop, Click Properties.
Click the General tab, click Delete Files and the Clear History button.
Click the Connection tab, click your default connection Settings.
Write down all settings, then clear all the check boxes.
Click the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults.
Click the Security tab, click each item, and click Default Level.
Click OK.

Suggestion 2
Temporarily disable all the firewall and anti-virus tools, including Norton
anti-virus, Internet Security, etc.

Suggestion 3
If you still cannot install SP4, please try msconfig.exe to disable Startup
Group. You can copy a msconfig.exe tool from Windows XP/2003 computer to
your computer and perform the following steps.

1. Double click Msconfig.exe file to run it
2. Click the Startup tab
3. Click Disable All.

Restart computer. Does the problem still occur?

Suggestion 4

You can also try SP4 Network Installation. Please download from the
following web site.

Or directly from the following link.

Thanks all. The Spybot I have is ver 1.3 and all updated. I am going to try
the suggestions for the Windows/Office/IE updates I was unable to download
and will let you know if I was successful. Maybe that alone will kill the
irritating DSO Exploit thing. :)
