With a 1 in A1, a 2 in B1, and a 3 in C1, if I click on C1 and drag the
handle the D1, Excel increments the value to 4. Is there a way other
than Control C to cause D1 to be 3 (the same as C1) instead of 4 (C1+1)?

Excel 2000

If you only select c1 and drag the handle to d1 it will repeat "3".

If you select A1 to C1 and drag across, then Excel recognises this as a
sequence. So, with 1, 2 and 3, Excel will give 4, 5, 6, etc. If you just
select cell C1 and drag across, it is not part of a sequence and will just
repeat.

If you rightclick and drag (that autofill button), then when you let go, you'll
see a popup asking what you want to do.

Same question, but with dates. 4/01/02 in A1, 4/02/04 in B1, 4/03/04 in
C1. If I drag C1 to D1, it always increments to 4/04/04.

Thanks for the assistance.
