I need to repair my Windows following several crashes and Systems Restore in
Safe Mode, which did not restored the PC to 100% performance. I still have
all the original CDs with the Product Key, but I understand that since I
have SP2 installed, the repair cannot take place.
I also understand that there is a way of joining SP2 with the original
Windows CD to make the repair possible.
Since I am a self-learner and still consider myself as a beginner, will
someone please, let me know in easy to follow steps how to proceed with the
joining and repair job.

Many thanks for the reply. However, would it not be easier (and less work)to
remove the SP2 in Add/Remove, repair Windows from the original installation
CD and then install SP2 (which I also have on a CD) or download it from
Microsoft, after the repair job is done? I would appreciate your
professional view on this.

Adding to the advice of TurArian, do you have IE7, best if uninstall if you
have it as it will make repair difficult if not failure.
Yes you can Remove SP2 to equal the CD SP1 you have and perform repair
install.
For more in depth information on uninstalling IE7 see
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html.

I understand your reluctance, but actually it's not as bad/hard as it looks. Using
autostreamer was the way I did it for two systems running Windows XP Home. A lot less
hassel than uninstalling, repairing, reinstalling, etc.
Give it a go, it can't hurt and you might surprise yourself.

Thank you again, particularly about IE7, this is something I knew nothing
about. Maybe you are in the right mood to consider an additional problem I
am facing with the repair job on Windows?
In one of the crashes my PC lost the ability to produce neither the CD
contents or Installation Wizard on the Desktop, when a software CD is
inserted into the CD drawer. If I click Open in Roxio it will then show the
files on the CD, (even with Windows XPPro Disc), but not the installation
Wizard. The same happens if do this through My Computer. How can I perform a
repair job in such circumstances? There must be a way, because computer
builders install Windows on a bare machine - so what should I do?

Autoplay Repair Wizard
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B6-E8FA-45C4-A171-1B389CFACDAD&displaylang=en
or
http://tinyurl.com/4f2mx
The Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard scans your computer devices to find defective
AutoPlay settings, and attempts to fix those it finds.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP

Apart from that, I don't know. There was a few hits with google but nothing really that
helpful.
Have you checked the "Device Manager" to make sure the devices are working properly?.
Right click on "my computer" icon on the desktop - select "Manage"
You'll see "Device Manager" listed on the left.
Double click the "Device Manager"
See the listing on the right "DVD/CD-Rom Drives"

Well, I tried it and although the Microsoft AutoPlay Wizard repaired
something, because when I finished there was a message that "The AutoPlay
setting was successfully fixed" both drawers fail to produce the image of
the inserted Win.XPPro. installation disc.

Many thanks for all the help, but I see now I will have to take the PC to a
repair man.

The Microsoft AutoPlay Repair Wizard scans your computer devices to find
defective
AutoPlay settings, and attempts to fix those it finds.
Supported Operating Systems: Windows Server 2003, Windows XP

Apart from that, I don't know. There was a few hits with google but
nothing really that
helpful.
Have you checked the "Device Manager" to make sure the devices are working
properly?.
Right click on "my computer" icon on the desktop - select "Manage"
You'll see "Device Manager" listed on the left.
Double click the "Device Manager"
See the listing on the right "DVD/CD-Rom Drives"

| Thank you again, particularly about IE7, this is something I knew
nothing
| about. Maybe you are in the right mood to consider an additional problem
I
| am facing with the repair job on Windows?
| In one of the crashes my PC lost the ability to produce neither the CD
| contents or Installation Wizard on the Desktop, when a software CD is
| inserted into the CD drawer. If I click Open in Roxio it will then show
the
| files on the CD, (even with Windows XPPro Disc), but not the
installation
| Wizard. The same happens if do this through My Computer. How can I
perform a
| repair job in such circumstances? There must be a way, because computer
| builders install Windows on a bare machine - so what should I do?
