Repairing or Replacing Corrupt Files

I seem to have received a message on my screen, telling
me that it can't continue Windows XP because of a file
being either missing or corrupt. I went through my hard
drive & found that the file was not missing, so
logically, I figured that the hal.dll file is now
corrupt. My question is whether the corrupted file can
be fixed, or if it has to be reinstalled. If it has to
be reinstalled, where would I go to find this same file
if it is not on my Windows XP CD? If it can be repaired,
how exactly do I go about repairing it? Someone's
immediate assistance with this technical matter would be
very much appreciated.
