Repairing or re-installing Windows Messenger 5 gives error message.

J

Josh Mandel

After installing Windows Messenger 5, I noticed that when
visiting any url that was a .PDF, the installation
procedure for Windows Messenger 5 would start up (and IE
would hang while trying to load Adobe Acrobat).

So I tried reinstalling Acrobat; no change.

I next tried repairing Windows Messenger 5. It wouldn't
complete the procedure, instead, giving me the following
message:

An error occured during the installation of assembly
component
{874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C40B9B143D}, HRESULT:-214702864.

Any idea what's causing this, and what I can do to fix it?

Many thanks,
Josh Mandel

Greetings Josh,

Firstly, make sure that Windows Messenger 5 and MSN Messenger 6 are both closed. You may
even want to load up the Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Del or right-click in the taskbar and
choose Task Manager) and make sure that msmsgs.exe and msnmsgr.exe are not running. Then try
doing the repair again.

If you get the same error, then uninstall Windows Messenger 5 by clicking Start, then Run,
and type the following:
msiexec /x {4A432C6C-1E20-4266-95D1-5782349C6C62}
then click OK.

Then, after uninstallation, reinstall Windows Messenger 5 from:

Jonathan,

Many, many thanks for the help!

I tried as you suggested. First, I made sure neither process was
running (I don't actually have MSN Messenger installed). Then I
retried the Windows Messenger/Repair and got the same error message as
before.

Then I tried the uninstall you described, and got a curious response:
"This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

Doubly odd since I *can* run Windows Messenger, and it *does* tell me
it's version 5.

Might there be any other suggestions?

Thanks again,
Josh

Jonathan,

Wonderful! That did the trick...thank you very much! IE is now working
normally.

One last question...since I want to try to restore Windows Messenger
functionality, do you recommend that I reinstall WM 4.7, or WM 5.0? Or
neither? (I'm running Windows XP Home Edition.)

Many thanks again,
Josh Mandel

Hi Josh,

Either will do fine, although if you don't need any of the functionality in 5, you won't get
this nasty Adobe/Windows Messenger issue that crops up from time-to-time by using 4.7 (since
it doesn't make use of the Windows Installer).

Jonathan,

You are a gentleman and a scholar...at least, you play one on the
Internet. :) Many, many thanks for your advice. You've been a
terrific help.

Yours truly,
Josh
