Can anyone give me DETAILED instructions (Step by step,
and prompts)on how to do an XP repair? I have booted
with the cd in, hit the r key for repair, and then I'm
lost! It asks which window to log onto? I have no idea!

When you reboot and the line comes to hit any key, hit
any key. When the prompt comes up to repair, hit continue
to install XP. Shortly thereafter another line will come
up to repair. That is the one you want. Hit "R" to
repair. It will take about 35-40 minutes but you will not
lose any of your programs. It will just repai Windows XP.

Most people, unless they are dual booting, only have one windows
installation. Select THAT one.

That only is used for doing minor repairs - you are probably after a
repair of the whole installation. In that case, ignore that R; start
Setup , then after the license agreement take 'Repair Installation'.
This will retain your existing software installations and most settings.
But Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1;
It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.
