Repair install?

S

Sirius

Hello,

Does Vista give the "Repair install" option like XP does?
I am not able to find it, what am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

Hi Sirius--

It would help to say what your problem is, but I imagine you can't boot or
feel there is so much wrong with you OS that you need to fix it in some way.
There may be ways to fix your OS but until you tell us we can't be specific
and you may not need a repair install.

You can do a repair install as in XP ***if you are in Windows Vista.

If you can't boot, I'd suggest

1) Try startup repair
2) Try F8 to the Adv Options menu and try system restore from all safe modes
or try LKG if those don't work.
3) Try using the bootrec.exe command switches:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392/en-us

Bootrec.exe /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
Bootrec.exe /scanos
Bootrec.exe //RebuildBcd

Good luck, CH

Hello,

My problem lies with IE. I get this "page can not be displayed". This after
some infections with parasites.
I followed the instructions in the Microsoft KB article. Strange thing is,
it does work in safe mode with
networking. I did turn off all third party services but in real mode, still
no browsing. I can ping the router,
however. Other computers have no problem. Also, I can't get msconfig either,
only in safe mode.
So things are seriously messed up. All I have to work with is the recovery
partition, no Vista disk.
So the last resort in the article is to reinstall. System restore did not
work, either.

Hi,

Click start and type 'internet explorer'. One of the menu options will be to
load the browser without addons. Try this mode. If it works, then what you
need to do is disable the addons that are loading with IE under
tools/options/programs/manage addons. One of them is interfering, keep
disabling a few at a time until it works correctly.

Thank you, but I did try that. It was one of the instructions in the KB
article. IE does not work in real mode without add ons either. It's really
messed up.

Sirius-

Thousands of times on this and the XP and Office group I see people ready to
format a box or think they need to radically repair Windows when there are
specific sub-niche fixes for their problem if they would only state it.

How often is IE not displaying the page? IE 7 or 8? Can you hit the web at
all?

How do we know if you can't hit any sites even though ping works, it's not a
problem with your ISP? Have you tried resettking your modem or rebooting
and unplugging modem and router and when the lights go on in the modem then
adding the router back in?

As to "infections with parasites" I'm not sure whether you mean spyware or
more serious viruses/trojans or blended threats. Run a spyware
scanner--Vista comes default with Defender and I highly recommend Windows
Live One Care which has it's own built-in spyware scanner antivirus, backup
mechanism, and highly tweakable firewall and seemless printer sharing tab.
You can try it free for 60 days at www.onecare.com .

Which MSKB's instructions did you follow? Without knowing I'm not sure
whether it's one that would help you.

So,..

You can't hit websites but I don't know if you mean some or all.
Msconfig doesn't show up.
Turning off 3rd party services didn't help.
You don't have a Vista DVD.

You say system restore did not work, but as to system restore you should try
all the options @ the F8 menu including all the types of safe mode to reach
system restore (sometimes one works when another does not) and Last Known
Good.

One thing you can try is to run SFC. Type cmd in the search box>right click
it and choose elevated command prompt by clicking "run as administrator" and
type sfc /scannow at the cmd prompt.

If you had a DVD I'd have you run Startup Repair. Maybe you can borrow one.
You don't need a product key to run it if you do.

Good luck,

CH

sometimes it is not IE at all.
you may think I am insane (or even stupid), but delete ALL network adapters
from device manager.
Then, reboot and allow the network adapters to reinstall and reconfigure
your network.
IE should now connect as the Winsock and LSP files have been recreated, now
uncorrupted.
malware can do that...

It is IE 7. Can not get any pages on this pc, either with wire, or wireless.
The internet works with safe mode with networking.
Also, I have two other pcs plugged into my router and they work fine. They
are my pcs, the notebook is somebody else's. I am trying to fix it for her.

By parasites I meant all of the bad things, virus, trojan, spyware.

The article:

Thank you.

S

Sirius

Yep, tried that too. Did not help.
The most annoying thing is, IE7 works in "safe mode with
networking".

Thank you.

Sirius--

I already provided instructions on dealing with what you call parasites. I
assume you tried resetting the modem and router by unplugging both and
rebooting and plugging the modem in first and then after all lights are on
properly plugging in the router.

You failed to state whether you ran SFC on her computer as I advised. If
not, please do so.

You failed to state whether you ran a spyware targeter--at least one and
also something like Ad Aware. Defender is default with Vista.

I'm not clear whether any restore points are available or not.

I'm not clear if you have tried to restore in all safe modes, and I'm not
clear whether in fact, you have tried Last Known Goodl.

Again, if you can get hold of a Vista DVD from some source, I'd run Startup
Repair as well.

Try at the cmd prompt: ipconfig /release a nd then ipconfig /renew

Try at the command prompt::

Using the bootrec.exe command switches:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392/en-us

Bootrec.exe /fixboot
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
Bootrec.exe /scanos
Bootrec.exe //RebuildBcd

Good luck, CH

Sorry for being unclear.

I am having the problem AFTER removing the parasites.
Using "Maximus the Mad's" article:

http://www.freespaces.com/maxwachtel/removal.html

limited to no internet. Dr. Web Cure-it seems to work well.

If I use sys restore, the parasites will come back.

I spent so much time on this, that I believe, if I started from scratch
right away I would be done by now.

Why fuss with the router? Other pc's work with it.
Also, the "sick" pc can get on the internet in "safe mode with networking".

CMD freezes up.

Will a Vista Home basic upgrade(cheapest) work on a Home Premium?

Thank you.

S

Sirius

Oh, one more thing. When I said system restore did not work, I meant that I
restored to an earlier point but still could not access the web.

Thank you.
