Repair Install

Hi, I have a corrupt version of WindowsXp Home that I was
trying to repair and am running into ALL sorts of
problems. First, when I startup my system with the
WindowsXp CD in the CDROM Drive, I am not brought to the
Windows Install page but instead, my system starts from
the CD. My first question is how do I get the system to
bring me to the WindowsXp install screen so that I can
choose repair?
My next question I assume is a more serious "problem",
Since I was unable to get to the WindowsXp install screen
via startup, I clicked on My Computer and Opened the
WindowsXp CD that way.
I was asked if I want to Upgrade (which I found curious
since WindowsXp Home is already installed) I clicked OK
and the Upgrade install began. With about 13 minutes left
in the install, I received an error message titled
UNREGMPZ.EXE-Entry Point Not Found with The Proceedre
entry point GETIUMS could not be located in the link
library MSDART.DLL. From what little I know, this does
NOT look good and would appreciate your help.
Again, my objective is to Repair WindowsXp Home.
Thank you,
Bob

Right.

The repair is done by booting the xp disk. At that point
you can either go to the repair console (pretty useless
for most people) or continuing the cd until it gives you a
choice to either "repair" or install "fresh".

The repair will delete your xp files, copy new ones, ask
for your cd key (depending on your version of xp disk) run
the setup program that configures hardware, etc.

Just like a fresh install except it leaves your settings
and stuff alone. Mostly. It is a pretty drastic action
and there's always the chance for damage to your files.
So backing up first is always a good idea.

XP is pretty stupid in many ways. Gone are the easy
repair stuff in Win98.

And XP is absolutely idiotic about hardware changes. XP
is totally ignorant about using a nice generic 'default'
hardware config in an emergency. The best it can do is
try to use the last "working" setup, which if the hardware
has changed or something is damaged, isn't going to help.

your system isn't starting from the cd, its starting from
your hard drive. you need to change the boot order in the
bios to boot from cd first.

dglock is probably correct but it may not be the boot order.
Make sure your watching the screen when you boot.
If the CD is first in the boot order like dg says to put it then when you
boot
a message will pop up on the screen, but only for like 10 seconds, telling
you
to press any key to boot from the CD. If this times out and you don't press
a key then it will boot to the HD.
