I'm changing to a new mb which will require a repair install. My XP cd is of
the original XP. Will I have to re-update to SP2 or will the SP2 files
remain untouched?

Personally, I'd recommend doing a clean install of XP to prevent any
registry conflicts and you first download a pile of critical updates and
then SP2

It'll put the system files back to 'original'; I.E. what's on the CD.

You'll then need to reinstall service packs for Windows and Internet
Explorer (plus security updates). You don't need to go through SP1. SP2 is
'complete'.

After the reinstall you'll most likely get a rash of installer messages
trying to reinstall various things. Forget them. It's confused because
things (not the O.S. but application settings are 'preserved') are linked
to SP2 files but SP2 isn't there. They'll automagically go away once SP2 is
installed.

As a convenience, and precaution, it's a good idea to download the I.S.
(full) version of SP2 before you do the reinstall so it's there on the hard
drive and ready to go, just in case you have connectivity problems before
it's reinstalled.

Thanks for the info guys. Wound up having to do a clean install anyway but
thanks for the help.
