Renaming Data...

I have data in column A:

a
b
c
a
c
c

What I need to do is use a formula in column B which will turn all the a's
in 1's, all the b's into 2's, and the c's into 3's etc. (i.e. output in
column B would be...)

Is this possible with a formula?

=CODE(LOWER(A1))-96
