Renaming contents in Folders

When I attempt to rename anything (Word, PDF's, notepad, zip files, etc.)
inside my subject folders I recieve the following message:

"If you change a file name extension, the file may become unusable. Are you
sure you want to change it?"

How can I remedy/ stop this from occuring anymore?

It sounds like you have Folder Options> View set to *not* hide extensions
of known file types. When using this setting, include the extension when
renaming a file. If you forget to do this, XP will warn you with the
message you noted above.

If you use the default setting of hiding known file extensions, XP will
automatically attach the extension during a rename for you. You do not have
to type it in and will not get the warning.

I sent an Email using my MS Office Outlook by clicking on your name of
where you posted your solution. But.........
I want to know how to return the default settings of XP to automatically
attach the extension(s) during the renaming? I used your solution which was
very (simple) and extremely appreciated (THANK YOU), but I would rather not
have to type all those file extension identifiers.
Again-Much Thanks,
Charles

You're very welcome. To change the setting, open Windows Explorer or My
Computer. Click on Tools> Folder Options. On the View page, scroll down
next to the line item: Hide known file extensions. Click to place a check
next to it and click OK to lock in the change and to dismiss the window.

Ooooooooo Sharon F.,
You are .......well....an angel tech goddess, providing of course your
gender matches your on line name. I have been changing files in several
folders immediately after being careful to assimulate the closest,
"Hide............." phrase, to yours for .... " known file extensions" with
perfect precision. No more message!!!!
I found, "Hide extensions for known file types", placed a check next to it.
Completed your instructions (although I clicked "Apply", before "O.K.") and
'voila'!!!
THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU !!! THANK YOU !!!

Since you helped me with that annoyance...........could you maybe help with
determining the reason I can no longer get my "Lexmark X83 All-in-One"
printer to fully install to my computer.
Yes, I have installed SP2. Prior to that update there was never any problem
uninstalling and re-installing when faced with, "Failed to communicate with
the printer" or similar message. Just thought I'd include this tidbit of
information.
If so, O.K., if not, I understand.
Everything I've done:
1.) Tried uninstalling and completely removing anything in my 'C:Drive' that
had to do with Lexmark and then attempted re-installing the software.
2.) Downloaded from Lexmark site on my own all the same troubleshooting
ideas and did exactly what the on site troubleshooter detaled that a Lexmark
tech suggested through several days of email support.
a. Using the 'clean utility.exe' uninstaller.
b. Drivers re-installation for the software.
c. Next suggestion was for me to try installing my printer on another
computer. I don't have access to another printer to have tried this
troubleshooting step. If I had, this may have, this would have been reason to
replace my printer!!!!!! Have not printed more than 1,500 pages from this
printer from my computer. It does still copy independently though.
3.) Next, I contacted Dell support. There I was instructed to use my
"Drivers and Utilities" CD. Don't remember how we got to the area with
'yellow' question marks but turns out that the CD solved that problem with
drivers. Then when the uninstallation/re-installation failed I was transfered
to a 'Dell' printer specialist that basically walked me through the very same
check. Followed by a, "Yep, can't help ya unless you completely save
everything to disk and uninstall your whole system !!!
Sir, are you ready to begin?" Not NO !!!!! But, H....! NO!!!
Sharon F. ....... OTHERWISE, the whole system works absolutely fine.
Incidently, I am so against dumping and starting fresh because I did all
that 5 times over the 1st 18 months (through this past June 2004). I kept
telling these guys on the otherside of the 'pond' that even I as a novice
felt that the hard drive was the culprit !!! Eventially, I landed an 'Angel"
very much like you that actually stuck with me. She called back on time
(within 15 minutes) as she promised each day for a whole week. She left me
with specific instructions that had the computer go through a complete
diagnostics check. When she called me back, I had the results that I read to
her over the phone and then she agreed with me and sent a 'tech' to replace
the drive.

Well, "THANK YOU" so very, very, very much,
Charles

LOL! Yes, gender matches name and thank you, Charles. Your reaction to tech
support's suggestion of reinstalling everything on your system was the
correct response. It makes remote troubleshooting easier for them
(sometimes) but greatly inconveniences the customer.

A few all-in-one printers developed problems with SP2. In most cases, this
has been rectified with updated printer drivers and printer software
provided by the printer manufacturer.

If no updates available, completely uninstalling the printer (both drivers
and software) and then reinstalling using the most current drivers/software
available. In either case, be sure to check the printer manufacturer's
site. The versions they have available for downloading are often more
current than what was originally shipped with the product.

When removing the printer from Device Manager, you'll be notified of the
presence of files specific to the printer (these are the drivers) and asked
if these should be removed. Answer "yes." Printer software is removed using
Add/Remove Programs.

Doesn't hurt to restart the computer at this point. Clear any residual
files out of the hidden folder: ..\Documents and Settings\<your
account>\Local Settings\Temp (Use Folder Options> View> Show hidden files
and folders to get at this folder). Then reinstall the drivers/software for
the printer following the directions for installing the printer exactly.
Following the directions is important because "when" the printer gets
attached during the process can be critical to success or failure of its
installation.

If you need more help with this, repost in the windowsxp.hardware
newsgroup. The printer/imaging/hardware MVPs hang out there and should be
able to help you over any rough spots you may run into - hopefully there
won't be any but just in case...
