rename sheets

When I rename a sheet - i.e. January - when I hit enter it comes back like
this: .xls[January Why?
Excel 2000 never did this. I am renaming the sheet by double-clicking on it.
How can I have just the name appear, and not the extention?

Do you have a square bracket in the filename?

If yes, then close your workbook, then go to windows explorer and rename that
workbook.
