Removing USB causes PC Crash (BSOD)

My View

This problem has been posted to a number of forums and newsgroups but as
yet no-one has found a solution.

My feeling is that SP2 install causes this but you might have a better idea.

This problem occurred with an old harddrive and also has now occurred after
installing a new harddrive and a new install of Windows XP Pro SP1 followed
by install of the SP2 upgrade.

The problem:
Whenever I remove either a flash memory stick or a card reader from any of
the USB ports the PC crashes with the following blue screen:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Tech Info
STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000188, 0x00000FF, 0x00000000, 0x804E35E9)

A check of the Event Viewer shows no errors, however, the 'Save Dump' reads
as follows:
"The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000000a
(0x00000188, 0x000000ff, 0x00000000, 0x804e35e9). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini081305-01.dmp".

I have checked for conflicts and the only one is IRQ 20 is shared by both
'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System' and 'SiS 7001 PCI to USB OPen Host
Controller'.

I have tested by moving the USB mouse and it does not cause a BSOD. It only
happens with the memory devices that show the USB connection in the taskbar.

I have seen this problem posted many times so it is obviously an issue with
some PCs.

Any suggestions would help. I am thinking that un-installing SP2 may be the
only solution.

regards

PeterH

You never mention anything about removing the device before unplugging it.
Are you following that procedure?

This problem has been posted to a number of forums and newsgroups but as
yet no-one has found a solution.

Please do not merely mention this but not tell us what has
already been tried with a concise list, otherwise you'll
never get anywhere, people will just keep recommending the
same things over and over. Also, the post is a bit jumbled
up in chronological order, we need background before the
following feeling (about SP2),etc.

Further, it would be good to know the exact state of the OS
at this point. For example, is it now a 100% clean install
you've not tried other remedies with, or has it been altered
in any way in attempts to resolve the problem?

Can we assume there is a clean relationship between SP2 and
the error. That is, it NEVER produces the error prior to
installing SP2, only after doing so?

Further, being a hardware group, the post should begin with
a concise list of all major system components, including the
chipset used on the motherboard, and the USB versions (1.1
or 2.0 for example) of the devices and ports.

I've rearranged the rest your post a bit and snipped a bit
out.

The problem:

Whenever I remove either a flash memory stick or a card reader from any of
the USB ports the PC crashes with the following blue screen:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Tech Info
STOP: 0x0000000A (0x00000188, 0x00000FF, 0x00000000, 0x804E35E9)

A check of the Event Viewer shows no errors, however, the 'Save Dump' reads
as follows:
"The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000000a
(0x00000188, 0x000000ff, 0x00000000, 0x804e35e9). A dump was saved in:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini081305-01.dmp".

What does the dump (Mini081305-01.dmp) show? Do not post a
large file here, but look at it there to see if anything is
revealed.
I have checked for conflicts and the only one is IRQ 20 is shared by both
'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System' and 'SiS 7001 PCI to USB OPen Host
Controller'.

Forget about IRQs for the time being, if that were a problem
it shouldn't wait till SP2 to manifest itself.

Have you updated your OS to use the latest USB drivers?
Latest drive (flash reader/etc) drivers too?
My feeling is that SP2 install causes this but you might have a better idea.

Well since you described installing SP2, don't do that.
Test the system pre-SP2 trying to replicate the problem.
Do you "need" SP2? It mostly attempts to patch holes in IE
and OE, though if you were to look through it and find that
it changes a USB related driver (or some other potentially
relevant thing) then there might be the possiblity of
reverting back to pre-SP2 state for that thing(s).
This problem occurred with an old harddrive and also has now occurred after
installing a new harddrive and a new install of Windows XP Pro SP1 followed
by install of the SP2 upgrade.

"Old harddrive" and new, BUT is it the same drive enclosure
or a different one?
Have you tried not connecting either enclusure, doing a
clean windows install, then SP2, THEN adding only one
enclosure driver?

I have tested by moving the USB mouse and it does not cause a BSOD. It only
happens with the memory devices that show the USB connection in the taskbar.

Do you use the taskbar icon to disconnect these devices
prior to removal? Is it possible you've had the files read
from these devices, still open in applications at the time
the "drive" was removed?
I have seen this problem posted many times so it is obviously an issue with
some PCs.

Any other commonalities to those other PCs besides SP2 and
removable drives? Did they ALL have SP2 and removable
drives?

You might try going into add/remove programs, uninstalling
all USB storage-related drivers, then going into the
registry and deleting all of the subkeys under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USBSTOR
Then reboot the system, install only one removable device
driver and try connecting/disconnecting only that one
device.

This is just a stab in the dark, but a number of pc's had problems with
mitsumi USB card readers after installing SP2 and using XP. The problem was
that they had installed drivers for the device although non were required
under XP. The problems were resolved by deleting the drivers

Thanks for your reply.

The reason for writing the post the way I did was because this issue has
been around for about 12 months for many other users out there and I was
hoping someone who had had the same problem as me and found an answer would
reply. If anyone can find a solution to this problem then there will be a
lot of happy users out there as you will be the first to do so. So you can
imagine that a lot of ideas have already been tried and failed. I have yet
to see a post where someone who had this problem has come up with a
solution. There was even one user who had this happen on a new PC with SP2
installed.

If you have not seen this problem before then I would not think the answer
will be easy to determine no matter what feedback I give you.

Users in past posts have all centred around SP2,
installed firewalls and virus scanners etc etc. I have tried removing virus
software etc but no luck. I may remove SP2 to see what happens but I would
prefer not to. You are correct that I did not have this issue until I
installed SP2.

I am not aware that the USB/flash memory drives can be updated as I believe
the drives come with Windows XP anyway and not from the manufacturer.
Previous versions of Windows (98 etc) do require manuafacturer's drivers.

Anyone who has had the same problem will know what my post is talking about.
I just hope one of them has found a solution.

thanks for your effort though

Who will find a solution unless they do what you aren't
willing to (supply the necessary information and actually
TRY to solve it)?

Have you even looked through any of the lists of SP2 fixes
to narrow it down any? You might consider it, if in fact
this problem is caused by SP2.

Finally found the solution. I had to uninstal a package called Alurias
SpyElliminator.

I do not have that software installed on my computer, but my computer still
crashes when I plugged in a USB memory. Any idea?

I've seen a couple of posting regarding crashes after inserting USB devices
but they didn't find a solution.
sorry :)
