Removing thumb drive

WHen I try to remove a thumb drive (after clicking on the little icon in the
tray and selecting the drive to be removed) I get an error message to the
effect that "The device 'generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try
stopping the device again later." I have closed any files I had had open on
the device. Is something perhaps running without my knowledge? What harm
can come of just removing the device? thanks!

Get a copy of "RemoveDrive" from here, and check for open handles ?

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbstick_e.html

*******
Usage:
RemoveDrive DriveSpec: [-l][-h][-w:nnnn]

DriveSpec: is the drive to remove, e.g. U: or \ for the current drive
[-L] loop until success
[-h] show open handles (admin rights required, exprimental)
[-w:nnnn] wait nnnn milliseconds before close
[-s] self delete removedrive.exe
[-b] let Windows show the "Safe To Remove Hardware" balloon tip
[-i] stop Windows indexing service (CiSvc) for a moment if required (admins)
[-d] show debug information
*******

I see that mentions the "Windows Indexing Service" as a possible cause
of a "busy" device.

Hi Jo,

I found a free program called "unlocker" helped with things locking my USB
drives
so they couldn't be stopped.

In my case it was InCD from Nero that was usually the cause.

Thanks! I'll try that.
