REMOVING SYSTEM RESTORE POINTS

G

GORDON

System restore automatically creates a system restore
point when a Windows XP update is installed. Because of
the large number of updates being issued many restore
files are being created, most of which are not needed
after a few days. How can the old restore points be
removed, thus freeing up disc space?

You'll need to turn-off System Restore, reboot, then turn it back on.

Hi Gordon,

There are three ways to easily remove restore points (you should not do this
selectively).

1) Start/run cleanmgr.exe (disk cleanup), there is a "clean up" button on
the "more options" tab to remove all but the newest restore point.

2) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, go to settings and reduce the
amount of space allotted to System Restore. This will remove older restore
points, how many depends on how much space you require for a point, and how
much space you leave.

3) Control Panel/System/System Restore tab, click the "turn off system
restore on all drives" box. This will eliminate all restore points. Once
reenabled, the system will begin creating new ones. You should reboot in
between doing this.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

The 'More options' has a button to remove all but the most recent
restore point

best method is to use the software built into windows to remove them.

best to create a restore point first.
then use System Tools - Disk Cleanup, and its option to remove all but the LAST restore point.
