Removing Subtotals in 2002 (XP)

I have a pretty standard sheet of 500 rows which I have subtotalled
When I remove the subtotals in Excel 2000 all is fine. When I do th
same in XP Excel throws all its toys out of the pram and takes 1
minutes at 100% CPU to do the same job. Does anyone have an
suggestions.

I did have this working withing a macro. But even when done manually
get the same error.

You're doing Data|Subtotal|Remove all?

I don't have a guess, but maybe turning calculation to manual, removing the
subtotals and resetting calculation mode will offer some relief.
