Removing Share for whole partition C:\ + D:\ really not possible/recommended ?

From Win2000 I know that it is a good thing to remove the sharing flag for the system partition
C:\ Hence I tried do to the same under WinXP.

I right clicked on a partition C: properties and went to the "Sharing" tab.
There I ticked "Do not share this folder" (from previous "Share this folder")
and confirmed "Apply". Much to my surprise WinXP (Prof) told me:

"This share was created for administrator purposes only. The share will reappear
when the Server service is stopped and restarted or the computer is rebooted.
Are you sure you wish to stop sharing C$?"

Hmmm, what does that mean: "... for administrator purposes only"?
Does it mean without this sharing my WinXP system (or at least some sub services)
will not run any more ?

What is the "Server service" and what action will stop and restart it?

Is there really no way of preserving the non-sharing even after a reboot?

Why pops the same message up for the independent (=only my data) partition D: ?
