Removing My Computer Icon

T

Tom

Hi, I would like to remove the My Computer icon from the
desktop without crippling other functions. My first
attempt consisted of deleting several items in NameSpace
and several CLSID. That worked but I also disabled
explorer search and lost the ability to move through the
directory tree when an "open file" type dialog box popped
up. I restored the changes I made and all functions were
restored.

Second attempt was setting the dword {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-
A2D8-08002B30309D} to 1 in both

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Non
Enum
HKLM\\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\No
nEnum

Again, it removed the icon, but this time I only lost the
ability to move through the directory tree when an "open
file" type dialog box popped up. I tried various
combinations of 0 and 1 in the two locations for above
dword with no success.

Any way to just remove the icon? Thanks!

Using tip 7672 in the 'Tips & Tricks' at http://www.jsiinc.com,
which is your later technique, I had no problem browsing the common open
dialogue.

If you use notepad, which used the common open dialogue, do you have the
problem.

I set the clsid value name to 1 at HKCU.

What Operating System and Service Pack.

I had no problem on W2K SP4, or WinXP SP2.

I did have your browsing problem on Windows Server 2003, but SP1 beta had fixed
it.

Thanks Jerold. I am using W2K SP4. I do have the browsing
problem in Notepad. The "look in" box has Desktop, but
that is it and you cannot move down the directory tree. If
I set the key back to 0, then I can either use the
pulldown to browse the tree or My Computer is available to
double click and display the tree.

Notepad would work anyway, because My Computer is in the
lefthand frame no matter what I do, but lots of third
party programs do not have that and in them my only choice
is to type the path of the directory I want to search.

It is possible that I changed/damaged something in the
registry when I was rummaging around.

Thanks!
