Removing .msi package in safe mode

Have a computer here which continually reboots if started in normal mode.
Will start OK in safe mode.

I suspect the problem is a display driver, only thing is this display driver
is an .msi install rather than the more usual .inf device-driver install. It
cannot be removed in safe mode, because msiexec isn't running.. and if you
try to start the Windows Installer service, you are told that it cannot be
started in safe mode.

I've tried manually removing the device drivers, but because of the
self-repairing (self-foot-shooting?) nature of msi installs they just
reappear.

Any suggestions as to how I can get this .msi package off the computer,
short of formatting?

You are presumably blue-screening, and you are set to reboot whenever
that happens. Right-click My Computer, and choose Properties. On the
Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Under System
failure, uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get
the blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those
details for more help.

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xF7650750, 0XF790B430, 0XF790B12C)

Nothing more specific than this, just general stop message blurb.

STOP happens while 'Windows XP' logo is on black background, before any GUIl
screen appears.

Computer starts normally in Safe Mode, which makes me reluctant to give up
on it, the problem can't be too severe.
