Removing external Smart Tags

I have accounting software that, when I installed it, offered to create
related smart tags that I could use in MS Word. I have Word 2002. Having
done that, every time I open a Word file (and open the application at the
same time), it wants the password for these custom tags. Whether I give it
correctly or hit cancel, it then opens a New Document, instead of the one I
selected. I have tried disabling smart tags, and even removing the ODBC
files that my accounting software created, but I still get the same intro.

You probably need to enquire of the company that created/supplied the
software. At a guess, this is an Add-in that's checking and ensuring the
SmartTags are working in the Word environment. If that's the case, they need
to tell you how to turn it off (if it's possible at all without removing the
Add-in)
