Received a somewhat urgent message from Gateway that they no longer supported
"Bigfix" and to remove it from my computer through the "Add/Remove" Program.
Hoever, I get the following message when I attempt to do that"

"Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...."

Gateway has been of virtually no help in solving this problem and would
appreciate
any help I can receive.

I was able to delte part of the file through a removal tool they supplied,
but I'm unable to close the remaining portion of 0.52mb.

Would appreciate any advice I can get.

You can remove the files in Safe Mode. If this doesn't work, don't worry
about it since they are taking up very little room. As long as Big Fix is
removed from the Startup matrix you'll be fine.

Start>Run>msconfig [enter]

This brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and OK
out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do you'll
get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box that says in
effect, "don't bother me about this again".

Important - Do not use the System Configuration Utility to stop processes.
Instead, use Start>Run>services.msc [enter] and do not stop any services
unless you really, really know what you're doing.

Unfortunately, Gateway and MPC have fallen upon very hard times, and using
their tech support is an exercise in frustration and futility. As luck would
have it, my hard drive crashed in my notebook shortly after I bought it, and
I lost all the Gateway software that was on the restore partition. (That's a
different long story.)
Go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and hit enter. Look on the Services tab,
check the box for "Hide All Microsoft Services." Look through the rest and
see if BigFix is listed, and if so, uncheck it.
Look on the Startup tab and see if it's listed there, and if so, uncheck it.
If it's not listed in either place, try rebooting into Safe Mode and see if
you can delete the rest of it then. Look in Event Viewer and see if any
errors pertaining to BigFix are listed there.
If your restore partition is intact or you have the Gateway software disk,
try reinstalling it, then removing it through the programs own uninstall. If
worse comes to worst, you can try downloading it from here
http://www.softsea.com/download/BigFix.html , install it, and then uninstall
it.

Good luck,

SC Tom & Malke,

Thank you both for your excellent input.

Since "Bigfix" is not listed in the start-up programs or processes, I will
"live" with it listed in the "Add.Remove" listings.
But what does the "Setup.EXe" message mean?

Thanks>

But what does the "Setup.EXe" message mean?

It just means that the original BigFix files are damaged and its
uninstallation routine isn't working. If you want to remove the entry from
Add/Remove Programs for cosmetic purposes, Start>Run>regedit [enter] and
navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Uninstall

Look for the BigFix entry and delete it. A lot of the entries on the left
will consist of numbers/letters but when you highlight an entry you will
see what it is on the right side. Be careful not to delete anything except
BigFix.
