Removing Applications from Start-up Routine

Ian Stock

How do remove applications from the start up routine? I am trying to speed
up the start routine, and really don't need Winzip, QuickTime etc launched
every time I start the system. I don't want to lose the apps, but don't
need them running all the time.

Thanks,

Ian

Hi ;

using regedit.exe, see applications launched in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
you also have other "Run" keys in current_user and
local_machine hives.

Use Regedit !

Have a look overhere : (regedit)
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Take a look also in HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You'll find a list with known and less known programs that start up when you
log in.
Take a live insurrance - because mistakes overhere don't give you a second
chance !

How do remove applications from the start up routine?

Win98 and WinXp have MSCONFIG, but Win2k does not... be VERY
CAREFUL what you disable, or your computer may not run at all
This program does that http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
Also
Stop Flash from taking "forever" to download those huge files

Stop Internet Explorer pop-ups http://www.panicware.com
Prescreen and block Email http://www.mailwasher.net

Those you mentioned can be stopped by r-clicking the icon in the system
tray and selecting the appropriate option.

I know, but loading them at start up slows down the whole process and is a
general annoyance not needed. I know how to disable them in Win 98 quite
easily, but I gather it's not so easy in Win 2000.

Colon Terminus

Download and install Mike Lin's "StartupCPL". This installs a Control
Panel applet that'll give you absolute control over what runs at
startup.

In the options for those two you may select to have them NOT start at
all. Then they DON'T start.

Greetings --

In most cases, one need only open the offending program and
deselect the option to "display icon in the system tray" or to "start
when Windows starts."

To view the list of your start up programs, look in the
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up
folders, and in the system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys. These can
also be viewed, if I remember correctly, by right-clicking My
Computer, selecting "Manage" and expanding System Tools-- System
Information -- Software Environment -- Startup Programs. To prevent
any of them from starting at login, you'll have to delete shortcuts
from the startup folder(s) and/or edit the registry. I should point
out that, in order to make such system modifications requires one to
have administrative privileges to the machine in question. I should
also point out that one should not even consider editing the registry
unless he is fully confident that he knows exactly what is going to
happen as a result of each and every change.
