Removing an item from the system tray

How do I get an item out of the system tray and also keep it from loading
again. I would prefer to just start the program from the start menu.

Using Msconfig to shut off Auto-Start programs

.. Click Start, then go to Run, then type in: msconfig
.. Click on the Startup tab at the top, this will show a listing of programs that
auto start when your computer is first booted. If you uncheck the box the program
will no longer auto start and sit in your system tray /notification area when you
boot. You'll need to reboot before this takes effect.

Another way to do this would be to go to the program that is in your system
tray/notification area and you may find the settings to remove them from the auto
start, most programs have this listed in the properties section.

First thing to try is open the program concerned and see if in its own tools
or options it has anything that says load on boot or startup or about placing
an icon in the system tray, and if so make sure those options are deselected.
If it doesn't seem to have such options then look through its help file, and
also see if there is any note in a readme file in its folder, and last see if
the makers website says anything on what to do. Might be it has such options
but they're not shown clear in its options panel, etc., and the best way to
stop a program loading at startup is always first to have good go at getting
it to not try and have Windows load it.

1.- Open the program and see if the Options or Preferences give a choice.
or
2.- Look in Start>>Programs>>Startup.
or
3.- Start>>Run>>msconfig>>Startup

Hi David,

Check for an option to not having the icon load in the System Tray via the
program(s) in question.

Other options for removal:

Go to Start/Run and type in: msconfig. Go to the Startup Tab and uncheck
accordingly. Then run this script to remove the disabled items from the
registry.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

This is my first time here. I tried to ask a new question but the choice of
discussion groups threw me off and this one is sort of relevant.
The MSFT Beta AntiSpyware icon is on my desktop, in the start menu and in
the system tray. Since I run it on demand, I would like it OUT of my system
tray.
Right clicking shows only the Shutdown option which I am not sure about -
I don't want to shut the program down, just want to remove the icon.
Thank you for your help.

As a piggy back on this how do I know what is safe to remove from this
window are there files that are necessary for the computer to run correctly.
because some of the files are not in my tray.

Do it through the program options which is where you should look for
this type issue for any program if it's not offered as a choice from the
icon itself. Open AntiSpyware by double clicking the icon, Options (on
the menu line) | Settings | General | put a tic mark in Hide ...

Also a few tips. Don't hijack another thread. Post a new one. You are
using the web interface to access this group, but that is slow and hard
to use. Better to use a newsreader. XP has one built in, Outlook
Express. There are other free and pay ones available too depending on
your taste. Here is a link to setting up Outlook Express.

Don't hijack another thread (piggy back as you call it). Post a new
message. Also try using a newsreader instead of the slow and cumbersome
web interface which is awful in comparison. XP comes with one, Outlook
Express. There are others available too. Here's a link on how to use
OE for newsgroups:

As to your question research what the program does through google and
various sites, then decide if you need it.
