OS Windows XP Home. When I log on to my computer I'm
receiving a windows cannot find error. It says at the top
desktop. Then it says windows could not load a file
specified in registry. Make sure the file exists on your
computer or remove the reference to it in the registry. I
don't think this file is supposed to exist. The name of
the file is just a group of 7 squares a space then 14
more squares. My question is how to remove the reference
to this file in the regisrty. This happened after I had a
stubborn trojan virus that norton couldn't fix.
Instructions on removal @ Symantec said to turn off
system restore so that is not an option. Ideas anyone?

If it's happening at startup, it's most likely related to the RUN
keys. Have you looked at the startup tab in MSCONFIG for anything
suspicious?

registry. had
unchecked them both and rebooted and the errors were
gone. Thanx for your help

.
P.S. Dave, I realized that when my computer restarted it
did so in selective start-up. When I rebooted in normal
mode the changes I made were undone, so those errors came
back. So I'm still stuck with the errors. Pandora

Yes, putting it back in normal mode does do that.
All you did in selective mode was to "hide" them.
Nothing wrong with that, I run mine permanently in
that mode. It's harmless.
if you feel comfortable editing the registry, use
REGEDIT to remove them permanently.
Navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Look in the right pane where it says "name" and delete the
offending items.
