Aloha all. I am finding Vista frustrating. VERY non-intuitive, and I can no
longer easily do basic things. I can't even edit folder toolbars and add
basic tools I like to use (cut, copy, move to, etc.).
Can I simply use my XP install disk to wipe the drive and install XP and get
rid of Vista?
Thanks.

Is this a new computer? If so check on the computer manufacturer's web site
to see if there are XP drivers for it. Some new models are not being
supported with XP drivers. Also it could void the warranty and certainly
any hope of tech support from the computer manufacturer by changing the OS.

If there are XP drivers then sure, install XP like you would normally with a
clean install.

Hi,
Tools which you looking for was swept under Organize button.

Yes you can use XP install CD to format disk and install XP.

I still don't see any Copy To or Move To commands. I used them a lot in XP.

Please say all that again..

The vistaboys MUST listen and start realizing that their OS is crap
at some point

perhaps if enough people keep blasting the same thing over and over in their
thick sculls, they will get the picture!

I congradulate you of going back to XP as any intelligent user would.

Then you will be toddling off back to the XP NG?
Or will you continue to lurk and mock in the hope that someone may teach you
how to use Vista?

I have vista...

I have beta tested vista since it was called longhorn

and I will be using it because I will have to, but that doesn't mean I have
to like it.

And I ask you... if I was really a troll, why am I not going and complaining
about
other products like XP or MacOS or something? Why am I here?
A true troll doesn't care about where he is ... he just wants to create
mischief.

There MUST be a reason!!!! Perhaps that vista really IS a pile of steaming?
Is it perhaps that Im trying to find a way to reverse the problem vista has
created?

IS it perhaps that I have understood more and know more about vista than the
average joe in here, (and many of the mvp's too)
and I am trying to communicate this elementary truth, yet I am astonished
that people cant see the truth right in front of their eyes?

Can a glassy theme and flip 3d effects make them so blind so that they
cannot see
in a slightly deeper level?

There is a mental block.. and I understand it. A person who has spent
several hundred bucks, doesn't
want to accept the fact that they paid so much money for a product that is
worse than a previous one.

OK then I shall wait a while longer and reserve judgement.
If you are true to your word then I will see posts from you pointing people
toward answers (other than Vista is shit).
Otherwise my initial suspicions will be confirmed.

Try to be a little constructive toward people who come here seeking help
rather than just being another anti-MS bore that I have had to endure since
Win95

You used to be alright on here ONCE upon a time; but now, you are a joke.
I knock Microsoft about their products and sales methods, but also say when
something is working OK.

You are just a knocker.

You say PERHAPS that you know more then the average Joe, and MVPs on here
about Vista.
I don't see you helping anyone, as you used to do sometimes.

You've lost the plot!

You're sick.
Get lost and get some real help.

Of course you can. But I recommend that you don't get rid of Vista so
quickly. Like anything else that's new, there are differences and it
takes a while to get used to them and find out how to use its
features.

I don't know if I want to go back to XP, but Vista is making me very
unhappy. It's new, yes, but I don't have time for my productivity to fall to
nil because I have to keep changing my mouse and trackpad settings back to my
personal preferences every time I open my laptop or walk away from it or ten
minutes pass.... I have tried on multiple forums to get some real answers
and a solution to this (and other setting issues). I have gotten no
response.
I also can't get the screen settings straight so that I can see the words
I'm typing clearly without a magnifying glass (though I can change it so all
the menus are gigantic).
Every time I open a program, it asks if I want to update or makes me aware
of some little thing that I have already clicked the "don't ask/remind again"
button for 100,000 times. No one will tell me how to solve that problem
either.
I tried emailing MS directly, but even after following all their directions
to locate the product key and typing in EXACTLY the way it's written on my
screen (in that system folder) AND exactly the way it is on the sticker under
the laptop about five times and being told it didn't match or wasn't typed
right, I give up.
The location of the refresh button in IE is odd to say the least. To say
the worst, it requires way too much mousing. I don't need carpel tunnel from
the refresh button. Whatever, IE was never that special and Firefox works
just fine.
The delete key is in a weird place that cause me to have to lift my whole
hand instead of being able to fluidly use the same keyboard shortcuts.
That's Dell's retardation, though.
The settings, though....please. The very LEAST I expect from an OS is that
if I set the tracking speed on my mouse, it'll remember it unless it suffers
a massive meltdown.
I'll give Vista two more weeks. I realize it's new and wonky. I also
realize that for something that expensive, it needs to work a little better
than I've witnessed so far. A $4 tee shirt at the thrift store? I don't
expect much from that. A several hundred dollar OS that was in development
for years... If I haven't found an answer to this settings problem in two
weeks, this thing is being removed from my life.

My real question - for Blake or someone who might know - is: if I attempt to
wipe out this beast, will it indeed go away or will parts of it still be
hiding out on my hard drive eating up unnecessary space?

Thanks,

There will be nothing left of Vista if you system restore to XP using whatever
Dell originally shipped with your laptop to wipe out everything and install XP.
You do not say that you upgraded to Vista - I'm assuming that, and that Vista
went in as an upgrade install over XP, rather than as a clean install. If my
assumptions are incorrect, then my answer is suspect - ask in a Dell forum.

Ok maybe I am an idiot but how do I get rid of this program? Vista is awful!
I can not send anything to anyone unless they have vista, I can not get
emails to delete, this is screwing up my business life>! Please help if oyu

Are you talking about Word documents? If so, it's not a vista problem. It
has something to do with the version of Word or Office on your computer and
the version on the computer you're sending to. Not being able to send stuff
to folks who do not have Vista is not a problem I am aware of and I doubt
you'll find anyone on this group who has come across such a problem.

As for how to go back to XP, you will need to reformat your drive and
install XP.
HOWEVER....... I would not try to do that based on instructions in a
newsgroup. You may have things on your drive that you want to keep.
It would be much better if you would have a computer-savvy person by your
side to walk you through the reinstall.
Or you might consider calling one of those rent-a-nerd type places and pay
them to do the job for you. Just be VERY CLEAR with the person you hire
concerning the things that are are your hard drive that you want to keep.

Tracy, save you documents in .DOC format - use "Save as" and change the
extension... see if that fixes the problem for others.

The mail program included with Vista has been flakey from the start and
it seems like they haven't decided what to do yet or finished messing
with it, it is NOT suitable for business of any sort because it remains
unreliable - it seems to me to be an attempt to push folks into buying
outlook which has always been better for business anyway. They should
have just kept Outlook Express available.

Most like it is Thunderbird, if you don't need outlook's superior
facilities then set up Thunderbird and see how you get along with that -
if you set the server settings to not delete any mail except when you
choose to delete it you will leave messages on server in case of
problems, that way you can try both mail clients and see which you
prefer. Most of not all mail clients can "Leave a copy on server" so if
you need help ask.

If you really would like to remove Vista and restore XP consider having
someone install another drive in the PC and maybe a removable tray, then
you get the best of both worlds. Eventually you will have to move to a
newer OS anyway. Otherwise any retail XP CD will wipe the drive and
start over.
